The Dance Inn Newsletter
Thelma Goldberg, Director

What a great start to our 26th dance season!   It has been an especially busy four weeks filled with meeting new dance friends and reconnecting with our studio families. Thank you for your enthusiasm and dedication during the beginning of this exciting fall season. Our commitment to excellence in the field of dance education would not be possible without the outstanding professionals on our staff. If you haven't met all of our excellent teachers, please take advantage of our generous "make-up" policy to visit another class.  This policy encourages our dancers to visit other classes when illness, vacations or holidays get in the way of our regular weekly class.  This “open-door” invitation also applies to dancers who just want to dance more or who might benefit from extra practice.  To find the appropriate class, check the schedule posted at the studio, ask your teacher, or visit our NEW website at www.thedanceinn.com.  It’s been a pleasure dancing with so many talented and lovely young students.  On behalf of my staff, thank you for the privilege of sharing dance with your family.

DANCE HAPPENINGS

Our Legacy Dance Company and our About Time Tappers will celebrate our 14th annual performance in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade on Sunday, October 14th.  We will travel in by bus from the Munroe Center at 8:00 a.m., walk the route, and then perform before thousands of walkers.  Won’t you join our efforts to fight this disease?  You can walk with us or sponsor a dancer.  A sponsor sheet is posted in the office.  There is room available on the bus.  Contact us at the studio and help make this year’s performance our most successful ever!  Thank you for your contributions and support.

The Legacy Dance Company is holding their second Parent’s Night Out on Friday, October 19.  Sign your child up for an evening of Halloween Fun and help our dancers raise money for their trip to Disney World in May.

During the course of this year, you will notice dance happenings produced by Dance Inn Productions, Inc. (DIP). DIP is a non-profit organization that I founded in 1997, in an effort to bring supplementary programming to the local dance community.  It has always been important to me that the dance experience extend beyond the four walls of a classroom.  As Executive Director, I have committed myself to producing programming that educates, entertains and inspires.  An exciting opportunity for your family to experience professional dance at an affordable price and at a convenient location is coming up on October 27 and 28!

Barbara Duffy and Company, an all woman tap company based in New York City, is premiering their new show, “Stages”, at the Regent Theatre on Saturday, October 27 at 8:00 p.m.  I have set aside a block of 100 tickets for my students.  The price is only $24 and there is no handling fee!!!!  PLEASE COME!  I have scheduled Sunday workshops that are perfect for our tappers aged 9 – adult.  Children’s classes will be at the Regent and Adult classes at the Dance Inn Lexington studios.  Registration information and more info about Barbara and her company can be found at the website:  www.danceinnproductions.org.  Questions can be directed to Thelma at the studio.

STUDIO NOTES

RECITAL
We do not have confirmed recital dates as yet.  We are awaiting permission from Lexington High School, where we hope to have the show this year.  I will announce the dates as soon as they become definite.

COSTUME DEPOSIT
Deposits are due by November 15th.  In order to receive costumes in time for an early spring recital, we order and pay in full by early December.  We will not order costumes for students who have not paid a deposit by November 15th.  Costume deposits are non-refundable.  Please notify The Dance Inn before November 15th  if the student will not be performing in the recital and you do not wish us to order a costume; otherwise the parent/guardian is responsible for purchasing the costume.  Bills for the costume balances will be mailed with the recital packets in late January or early February.

We will begin measuring students for costumes on November 1st.  Please be aware that costumes come in child and adult Small, Medium and Large sizes.  Each costume company has their own method of sizing.  We do our best to fit all of our students according to the various companies’ charts.  Your child’s costume may need to be altered.  Parents are responsible for any alterations that may be necessary.

ADULT CLASSES are always open to new students!
Now that your children are settled in their activities, it's time for you to schedule something for yourself.  Join a tap class on Monday night, or Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday morning, or a Hip Hop class on Monday nights or Jazz on Friday mornings! Class cards for tap, jazz and hip hop make the financial commitment reasonable!  You only pay when you come!  Join the fun!!!  View the adult schedule online at http://thedanceinn.com/adultprograms.htm.

LABEL SHOES AND BELONGINGS
LOST AND FOUND items from all studios are now kept in a bin in the outer waiting area of The Dance Inn.  Anything not retrieved by November 14th will be brought to Goodwill.  Please help us empty it!!!!  All dancers’ belongings must have their names in them.  We cannot be responsible for items left at the studio.

ATTENTION TAP I AND II students/parents
Because we don't always get a chance to see parents after class, please ask your child how her/his shoes are fitting.  If your child's shoes are too big, they will experience frustration and failure.  Please attach tight elastics (available at the studio if you don’t have them) or insert innersoles or send along thick socks OR get smaller shoes.  We have used shoes for sale at the studio.  Thank you!!!

USED SHOE SALE
Shoes left to sell should be picked up by October 15.  If you prefer to leave them here, we are happy to accept them as a donation to the Legacy Disney Fund.  Check with the office to find out if your shoes were sold.

DANCE ETIQUETTE
Please review the Dance Etiquette sheets distributed during the first two weeks of class.  Copies are available at the office if you did not receive one.  Clarifying my expectations in writing has reaffirmed my commitment to make The Dance Inn a school of the highest distinction.  Providing a structured environment with clearly defined expectations will enable each dancer to give themselves wholly to the learning experience.  Your comments are most welcome as I strive for excellence in our school.

MAKE-UP CLASSES are strongly encouraged but are not required.  An updated Dance Inn schedule of classes is posted online and at the studio.  Any class of the same level is an appropriate make-up class.  If there is no alternate class, please speak to your teacher about options.  In some cases, a fun option for a “jazz” dancer is to try a “hip-hop” class or vice versa.  Teen tappers can always take an adult tap class on Monday night.  Whether you are a beginner or advanced student, optimum development of skills will only result from continuity and discipline.  Parental cooperation will be necessary in instilling these qualities in our students.  It is not necessary to call before attending a make-up class and students are always invited to come in for an extra class if they feel the need.  A revised schedule will be published in January when recital plans are finalized.

ATTENDANCE at class when a student is unable to dance is up to the parent.  We appreciate our students' commitment to their dance program and would like to define our policy on "sitting out" classes.  If a student is unable to dance but is feeling well enough to attend class, we expect them to participate through taking notes, giving feedback if requested and being as much a part of the lesson as possible.  Students who feel ill, have a fever, or are exhibiting “contagious” cold symptoms should stay home and rest.  Cases of prolonged absence due to illness or injury should be discussed with the teacher.

OPENINGS remain in some of our preschool and Tap/Jazz/Ballet I classes on Saturday and the Tap/Jazz/Ballet III on Friday.  Now that soccer season is coming to a close, we invite you to consider moving to a weekend class, when your child may have fewer activities.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES are extra fun at The Dance Inn! We provide party leaders, dance games and more – all under the loving and capable direction of “Miss Crystal.”  Call the studio to reserve your child’s special time with friends!  A $25 discount is offered to Dance Inn students who schedule a party by October 30 to be held by August 30!
